Serve at the Altar, Grow in Faith
Altar Boys
Altar boys play a significant role in the Catholic Mass, rooted in centuries of tradition. Historically, the Church has called upon boys who have received their First Communion to serve at the altar, reflecting their readiness to participate more fully in the sacred mysteries of the Eucharist.
The Duties
The duties of altar boys include assisting the priest in various capacities during the Mass. These responsibilities may involve carrying the processional cross, holding the Roman Missal for the priest during prayers, setting the altar for the Eucharistic celebration, and handling the sacred vessels and incense. Through these actions, altar boys help ensure that the liturgy is conducted smoothly, allowing the priest to focus on leading the congregation in worship.
The Role
The role of an altar boy is not just a functional one; it is also deeply symbolic. By serving at the altar, these young boys are drawn closer to the heart of the Church's liturgical life. They learn about the rituals, prayers, and reverence that are integral to Catholic worship. This service often marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith, as it fosters a deeper understanding of the Mass and instills a sense of responsibility and devotion.
